Another Adopt-a-Highway Site?
Jaci Elliott, our League's Adopt-a-Highway coordinator, says that she needs help identifying a second two-mile stretch of highway to adopt in response to member interest. She is looking for roadway sections in Colorado County or the northern part of Fayette County that could use a cleanup, have safe shoulder conditions and provide good visibility for the sign that reads "adopted by the League of Women Voters of South Central Texas. If you spot some roadway that meets these criteria, please email Jaci.
And, check out the poem that Jaci wrote about her experience as an Adopt-a-Highway volunteer.
Voter Services Planning for 2023-2024
Catherine Burns, our League's Voter Services Chair, will be hitting the road with President Janis Richardson later this summer for member get-togethers in each of our League's five counties with Voter Services as the main topic.
It's time to begin gearing up for November's very important Constitutional Amendment Election (with at least 13 proposed amendments to the Texas constitution on the ballot). These get-togethers are intended to help shape how our League encourages voter turn-out, makes a splash on National Voter Registration Day (September 19), and gets our highly regarded Voters Guides to registered voters in our area. We hope that they will also help members more easily spot the volunteer opportunities during the voting season that sync with their calendars and passions.
Catherine and Janis will also talk with members about the League's Observer Corps as a time-tested way to empower voters and strengthen democracy right here in our home community.
Watch your email for info about the date and place for this meeting in your county.
Website Walk-Throughs & Communication Upgrades
Have you visited our League's website lately? We hope so! Our goal is for it to be your "go to" place when you want to find out what's going on, connect with other members, or check on the status of your membership.
Thus, we're planning some "LWV Website Made Easy" walk-throughs for later this summer to help members get acquainted with what is on our website, how to find things, and how to manage the daunting task of signing in when you don't remember your username and password. We'll have dates soon, so watch your email for more information.
And, in the interest of more and better communications, we're gearing up our social media activity as well, with Leadership Team member Cindy Meredith now taking the lead with informative posts on our Instagram and Facebook pages at least twice weekly. If you're on these social media sites, please follow us and share our posts with your social media network. Sharing our posts is the best way you can help us grow our followers and our presence in the South Central Texas area!
President Janis Richardson will continue to share email newsletters like this one monthly. If you are not receiving them, check your spam folder or contact Janis.
Women's Equality Day Program on the Equal Rights Amendment
Save the Date: Saturday, August 26
At the behest of Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY), the U.S. Congress designated August 26 as “Women’s Equality Day” in 1973. The date was selected to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote.
Save date - Saturday, August 26, time tba - and plan to join us for a program on the Equal Rights Amendment, first proposed in 1923 and 100 years later, not yet certified!
We are putting a team together now to develop this program. Contact Janis or Lois "Robin" Robinson if you are interested in joining this team.
