I'm in touch to ask you to take action now to ask President Biden to push the ERA over the finish line before he leaves office.
The Equal Rights Amendment, first proposed by suffragist Alice Paul in 1923, has cleared nearly every hurdle. We have the 38 state ratifications needed. We have Congressional approval. The only remaining obstacle? A procedural deadline that Congress itself created.
Here's the breakthrough: The ERA Coalition, of which our national League is a leading member, has identified a direct path forward. The Coalition believes that President Biden has the authority to instruct the U.S. Archivist to certify and publish the ERA as the 28th Amendment to our Constitution. But he must act before leaving office.
Why this matters:
- Without the ERA, laws protecting women's rights can be changed or revoked at any time
- The U.S. is one of the few developed nations without constitutional protection for gender equality
- This impacts everything from pay equity to domestic violence protections to workplace discrimination
